7 Financial careers in non-profit organizations

Many financial professionals find that working in the non-profit sector provides them with a certain degree of satisfaction and pleasure that they could not get when working on salary alone. Although wages are lower, jobs in this industry tend to be safer in the long run, and people who work at the top of large companies can still get considerable salaries.

Although many salaries may be lower, the benefits of many non-profit entities are comparable to those of the best private sector companies. The workplace rules of non-profit entities are usually not as strict as corporate departments; employees may not need to wear suits and ties every day or follow strict schedules.

  • Accounting. Although the actual work required for this position is basically the same as that of an accountant in the secular field, it is as necessary in the non-profit sector as anywhere else.
  • Treasurer. This position is available in larger non-profit organizations, and the funds collected in these organizations are sufficient to require someone to deal with these issues.
  • Loan officer. There are some non-profit organizations that provide loans to eligible people, such as Virginia and various other fraternal organizations. These institutions usually require experienced personnel to initiate and process personal, vehicle, and mortgage loans.
  • Financial aid officer. Most educational institutions hire at least one of their officials to help current and future students obtain education funding. This job is often a fairly stable position, because a competent financial aid officer will help employers recruit more students.
  • Fundraising Director. This may be one of the most challenging positions in the non-profit sector. Those responsible for raising funds for employers usually face a daunting task. They usually try to achieve this goal by meeting with potential donors to attract them to contribute and organizing larger, more structured events and programs. Bring money into the organization. This position requires the ability to effectively plan activities and complete sales. It may also require foresight to find new sources of funding.
  • Interns and volunteers. If you don’t care about making money in your non-profit job or still going to school, consider volunteering to help an organization raise funds, or doing low-level accounting work as an intern under the supervision of an accountant.
  • Risky philanthropy. A new kind of venture capitalists and socially responsible lenders have sprung up, seeking to profit from the non-profit sector. These companies seek to generate funds by providing loans and funds to borrowers and companies in low-income areas where it is almost impossible to obtain funds from traditional sources such as banks. This new type of funding requires people to analyze and screen those who ask for money and process these transactions.
