Tesla Motors (TSLA), led by the well-known entrepreneur Elon Musk, is considered to be the main company leading the development of electric vehicles, even though the company is still a long way from achieving mass market sales. Musk and other members of Tesla’s executive management team continue to push the company forward, such as establishing a strategic joint venture with Panasonic Corporation (PCRFY) to become the largest manufacturer of lithium-ion battery packs.
Although Tesla has not yet achieved profitability, the relationship between Musk and Tesla’s leadership and investors has been ups and downs because the company’s stock has struggled to maintain a history of solid returns since 2018. So who is part of the leadership of Tesla Motors? Company decision?
Elon Musk is the co-founder, chief executive officer (CEO), director, and product architect of Tesla Motors, and is undoubtedly the main driving force. Musk is South African, the founder, CEO and chief technology officer (CTO) of SpaceX, and chairman of SolarCity after Tesla acquired a key solar company in 2016.
In the acquisition of SolarCity, Musk said that he intends to create a large integrated renewable energy company, the company can become a major supplier of solar panels and batteries required to drive solar panels.
Musk, who holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, is both an engineer and an inventor. He is the trustee of the Musk Foundation, which actively promotes the development of green technology and renewable energy.
Musk’s previous entrepreneurial successes include becoming one of the co-founders of the super-successful payment processing company PayPal (PYPL). Although Tesla has suffered setbacks, such as the crash of one of its self-driving car prototypes in May 2016, few people doubt that Musk can finally fulfill the investor’s promise to Tesla’s future.
Zachary J Kirkhorn
Kirkhorn just assumed the position of chief financial officer in March 2019, succeeding Deepak Ahuja as chief financial officer, who brings more than 20 years of global auto finance experience. Prior to this, Kirkhorn has held various financial positions at Tesla since 2010. Before becoming CFO, Zach served as Vice President of Finance, Financial Planning and Business Operations from December 2018 to March 2019. Kirkhorn holds a PhD in economics and mechanical engineering, as well as an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University in Applied Mechanics.
Guillen is the president of Tesla’s automotive business, a position he has held since September 2018. However, Guillen is no stranger to Tesla-he has been with the company since 2007, holding various leadership positions, including vice president, truck and other projects, and vice president of global sales and service. In fact, Guillen is the Model S project director, and he has spent most of his career in the automotive industry. Guillen holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, including dual degrees in Energy Technology and Mechanical Engineering at Escuela Technica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales and Ecole Nationale Superieure de Techniques Avancees.
Baglino succeeded Jeffrey Brian “JB” Straubel in October 2019, who served as the chief technology officer. In contrast, Baglino assumed most of Straubel’s responsibilities, but his title was senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering. He has been working at Tesla since March 2006 and has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
Jeffrey Bryan “JB” Straubel
Jeffrey Brian Straubel, often referred to as “JB”, was Tesla Motors’ 15-year life chief technology officer and a member of the company’s founding team. As of July 2019, Musk announced that Straubel will serve as a “senior consultant”. During his tenure at Tesla, Straubel was responsible for overseeing all technical and engineering design of all Tesla vehicles. He is also responsible for overseeing research and development (R&D), evaluating new technologies and designs, conducting due diligence with major suppliers, and verifying system testing.
Straubel is also a regular lecturer and guest lecturer at his alma mater Stanford University, where he teaches energy storage integration courses as part of the school’s atmospheric and energy program.
